Guidelines for Integration of Third-Party Tools with Moodle

Information Technology Services (ITS) at Colgate periodically receives requests from faculty members for Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) integrations with Moodle. We strive to provide faculty and students with valuable resources, but also carefully review the privacy, security and compatibility of third-party integrations with our system.

The following guidelines are in place for all third-party tools:

  • Requests for LTI integrations must be made by a Colgate faculty or staff member, not by a representative for a 3rd-party product.
    • Review of LTIs can take a significant amount of time (see LTI review form below), so requests should be submitted well in advance of need.
    • Documented need for the LTI must be identified prior to installation, including the course(s), semester(s) or department(s) in which the LTI is requested to be used.
    • Prior to installation, an LTI review form must be completed by ITS with information gathered from the requesting party and vendor.
  • If any problems are found during testing that show the LTI isn’t working well or there are concerns about safety or security, ITS may not be able to allow its use with Moodle.
  • ITS will work with our Moodle hosting provider and 3rd-party vendors to configure the connection of learning tools.
  • The LTI may be discontinued if any problems come up that put student data and security at risk, or if the user experience lowers in quality.
  • 3rd-parties are expected to fully support students and instructors for the features of their learning tools.
